We are a small group of friendly modellers who meet and fly at a site adjacent to the ex RAF wind tunnel site at Yarlswood, about 2 miles NE of Clapham in north Bedfordshire.
The club was originally formed by service personnel at the nearby Thurleigh airfield, at the time access to non service flyers was restricted, but this changed when the airfield was closed in the mid nineties.
Following the airfield closure at Thurleigh the club moved to its current site and now has no connection with the services. The name "Twinwoods" was adopted due to the fields close proximity to the Twinwoods airfield. It was from this field that Glen Miller took of on his ill fated flight from which he never returned. The old airfield is now the home of the Glen Miller museum.
We are primarily a fixed wing RC club, although some of our members also fly helicopters and gliders. Free flight is limited to small models due to our close proximity to the Yarlswood complex that borders on to one side of our field. The field is approximately five acres and is mown around five times per year with the ample grass runways cut weekly. The site does have trees on its perimiter but these are fairly low on the approaches to the runways and dont cause too many problems.
We also have a BMFA club examiner so "A" tests can easily be arranged. We are currently seeking new members, although we don't insist on you having an "A" certificate you will need to demonstrate that you can fly safely. Some training is also available to new flyers, but we try to restrict it to a couple of new flyers at any time. This gives you chance to get some good training and our trainers time to fly themselves.
